Slow down
Are you always rushing to work? Hurrying between meetings and never seem to have a minute to spare? The simple act of rushing triggers the ‘stress response’ which sends adrenaline racing around your body and puts you on high alert which can make you feel agitated and make everything feel that bit much harder.
The simple act of slowing down at work can have a transformative impact on your workplace wellness. Walking that bit slower, talking a little slower or allowing yourself an extra minute or two to get to the next meeting can help take the edge off, especially when work is busy and hectic. Slowing down helps you calm your mind and nervous system so you can be more engaging, creative and respond to opportunities when they arise.

Go outside
Working indoors, sitting down and usually under harsh fluorescent lighting can cause fatigue, muscle aches and pains and make concentrating difficult. The good news is that we don’t have to work outside to create a healthy workplace. All we need to do is head outside at least twice a day for at least 10 minutes. A walk around the block in the fresh, glancing up at the vastness of the sky or surrounding yourself with greenery for a few minutes several times a day can clear your head, stretch out sore muscles and leave you feeling refreshed. A fresh mind is better able to reframe problems, define more innovative solutions as well as improve multi-tasking.
Swap a coffee for a piece of fruit
Every experience that afternoon slump? It occurs usually after lunch around 2 or 3pm and can make us feel tired, lethargic as well as negatively impacting our motivation levels. It is tempting to reach for a cup of coffee or tea to boost our energy levels, however, as a stimulant, caffeine can give you an instant buzz but it can also have energy zapping effect when it wears off. If you replace one coffee a day with a piece of fresh fruit, not only will your body love it, but the natural sugars will give you more energy but without the drop off effect later.
Complement a colleague
Science tells us that we all love to be loved as well as love! When we are busy at work and there are lots of problems to solve or jobs to complete, it can be tempting to focus on issues, problems and what people are doing wrong. We forget that our colleagues do great things all the time day in and day out. By making it your practise to show a bit of love to a colleague by complementing them on their work or achievements, you will feel good, your colleagues will feel great and you will be sowing the seeds of change to develop happy and healthy workplace culture.
Pick up the phone
In the digital age it is tempting to rely on email or messaging apps to communicate with colleagues. Ever been stuck in a back and forth email conversation that just doesn’t seem to get anywhere? Because we use technology so much it is often our default mode, but make it a point every day to turn one email discussion into a phone call. We all know emails or messages can be misinterpreted so by picking up the phone we are creating space to fully listen and engage with a colleague to fully understand their perspective. It is also a chance to find out a little more about them and even create a new ally or friend! Human being naturally want to connect with others, and being a work is no different, so the next time your reach for the send button, pick up the phone instead.
